So a recent survey* found that 70 per cent of Australians don’t know who to trust when it comes to financial advice. The same global survey found that a meagre 16 per cent of Australians feel confident in their ability to meet their financial life goals. This is simply unacceptable.
There’s no doubt good financial advice can help us achieve our financial goals, and examples of this abound. But with recent cases of shoddy financial advice causing great financial hardship for many Australians, it’s no wonder the majority of us simply don’t know who to trust when it comes to taking care of our lifelong savings, especially when the giver of the inappropriate advice often turns out to be a trusted financial institution.
Where does all this mistrust leave the consumer? Unfortunately many will be grappling with financial decision-making, feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope with the uncertainty of a comfortable retirement. Never before have we been asked to make so many decisions regarding our financial choices – investments, super, pensions – there’s just so much to consider. And when the laws around super are continually tinkered, it’s understandable that some will feel a little out of control.
